How Factory Farming is Killing the Environment

Hello my favorite blogger! Today I wanted to discuss the importance of the food we eat and the the things that happen to the things we eat during the phase they are being produced. I watched a documentary called Fresh: Sustainable Food Production in America, directed by Ana Sofia Joanes, and the things I learned from this document were very interesting.

In the documentary, the short documentary sheds light on the overlooked beginnings of the food we consume, and it reveals the impacts of industrial farming. In the beginning of the film, one main thing the film addresses is “feeding the world” which highlights the misconceptions of mass production of industrialized farming, and unravels the truths of this with close inspection in the film.

One thing the film highlights is the case of cattle farming, where industrial agricultural companies in the quest to “feed the world” accumulate significant farming resources. Joel Salatin, a farmer who is in the film, concerns about a practice where large companies feed cows deceased animals, such as chickens or cattle, to lower total costs of the farm. This is highly concerning due to the fact that it leads the cows to risking diseases such as mad cow disease, which leads to risks to both the cows and the humans consuming them. But traditional farms such as Salatins prioritize the health of livestock without resorting to such practice for lowering costs. Which is very good, considering most farms can use products like antibiotics to sustain products. After watching this movie and learning of such things, it made me feel inclined to do research before buying certain products at the market, due to the fact of how disgusting this was to learn of. Overall I think it was important to watch this film to get insight of the horrors of mass farming production practices and to open my eyes to the evil truths of the way animals are treated and the animals we consume.

Overall, I felt this film had a very powerful message, and I think you should also watch it to learn more about the products you consume! Also be sure to do research about the products you consume, and how these things could affect you! I hope you enjoyed reading about this, have a great week!

  1. The film made me feel the same about the effort I put into checking whether or not the meat I'm eating is good. Great post!

  2. It's true how there are many horrors that the food industry doesn't openly show and what goes into this industrialization. Something I did like was how you brought up Joe Salatin and what he prioritizes to avoid the same mistakes that big industries make with their cattle.
